What is Salah?: Salah is a distinctive form of worship that
stands as the
second most significant
pillar of Islam, following the shahada (testimony of faith). It is a mandatory
prayer performed five times daily, as revealed in the Holy Qur’an and instructed
by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
Numerous verses in the Holy Quran emphasize the significance
of prayer.
Two examples include.
1.Arabic:
English: " But those who hold fast to the Book and establish prayer – indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the pious." (Qur'an - Chapter 7, Verse 170)
2:Arabic:
English: " Recite,[O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do." (Qur'an - Chapter 29, Verse 45)
Salah comprises several physical movements – standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting. It also includes the recitation of Quranic verses in Arabic along with various dua (supplications). Muslims face the Kaba, the Sacred House of Allah in Makkah, during their prayers. These physical actions, recitations, and supplications express humility and submission to Allah.
Muslims pray because Islam teaches that the purpose of life is to worship Allah alone. Soon after Muhammad became a Prophet, salah (worship) was one of the first commands given to him by Allah. Allah Almighty declares in the Holy Qur’an that humanity was created solely to worship him.
Arabic:
English: " And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)." (Qur'an - Chapter 51, Verse 56)
Salah is the second pillar of Islam and a fundamental aspect of a Muslim’s faith. A significant distinction between a Muslim and a non-Muslim is the observance of salah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Between a man and polytheism and disbelief there stands his neglect of the prayer“
The question of why Muslims pray five times daily is common, and the origin
of this number is often
unknown. When Muhammad (peace be upon him) became a Prophet at the age of forty, one of the
first teachings he received was how to pray. Allah sent the angel Gabriel (Jibreel) to instruct him on
performing wudu and salah.
Approximately 11 years after the prophethood began, a miraculous journey occurred where the angel
Gabriel took Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the first heaven. During this event, Allah specifically
commanded him and the Muslims to pray five times a day. This event is documented in the Holy
Qur’an, and authentic narrations from the Prophet (peace be upon him) confirm this journey.
The full account of the Prophet’s ascent to heaven is known as Isra and Mi’raj. While it is a detailed
story, the key part relevant here is the commandment to pray five times daily. Before this event, Muslims
prayed, but there was no set number of times for these prayers.
